Kittens, kittens

How many kittens does it take to fill a cat bed?  There are 6 orange kittens in one litter with part of that litter in the bed and 3 (two tortis and one orange) in the other litter!  It appears a larger bed will be needed soon -

These kittens are too young to be adopted.  One of the things we use to evaluate a kitten as to whether it is ready to be placed as an only cat is whether it is willing to sleep by itself at least some of the time.  It is a sign of their immaturity and need to have the comfort of another buddy when they continue to sleep together 'in a heap'!  These babies have a few weeks before they will go in for testing and then another week or so before they will be spayed and neutered.  By then they will have matured a little more.

Do you want a kitten but want to know what the personality will be like when it grows up?  Wait until the kitten is 4-5 months old.  By then we know more about whether the kitten will be a lap cat or a little more aloof, whether it is a crazy kid who needs another buddy to wear off some steam or if it is a little more laid back and will not be too lonesome if left alone while you are at work each day.

Kobe, new kid in the foster home

This handsome fellow came from a shelter where he was being picked on and says life in a foster home is certainly a step up!  He's holding his own there and even likes to pick on one of the other cats by biting his tail so he can be a tease.  He likes to be where the other cats are although isn't particularly buddy-buddy with them.

Kobe has a serious case of liking adults and children too - he is very gentle.  He likes to interact with you and keep you company but will go off and play by himself too.  His coat will need to be brushed or combed every week but he doesn't seem to matt so is pretty easy on upkeep.

Adoption, Sun. May 17 from 1-3 p.m.

Pet Haven cats will hold an adoption on Sun. at the PetCo in Richfield at 66th and Lyndale Ave. S.  We will have 14 or more cats there: fat cats, lazy cats, busy cats, sunny window cats, lap cats, playful and goofy cats and kittens.  Our kittens are from 4 1/2 months - 8 or 9 months.

Stop by, check us out, pick out a new furry member of the family!

Adoption fees range from $130.00 - $150.00.  Cash and checks accepted.  Felv/fiv negative, up to date on vaccinations, spayed and neutered, microchipped, treated for fleas and/or ear mites as needed.  Cats are kept in foster homes so we know how they get along with other family members, dogs and other cats.

Fran and Ira

Fran and Ira are siblings.  Fran is a calico with lots of white.  Her fosters are calling her Shortcake because she is so sweet.  She loves to smooch and get kisses early in the morning!

Ira has had several names, Tenor (for his very talky ways) and also Trouble!  Bet you've guessed he is a busy, busy boy who has to investigate everything - and swirl in and around your legs as you walk!  Ira is white with charcoal gray markings.

They're very social kittens, friendly, demanding lots of attention and purring and wanting to be with you in between racing around the house.  They could be adopted together or with another cat or kitten.  Ira might be a lot to handle if he were to be an only fellow - he needs a playmate to wear off some of his energy.

Coming Attractions

Sawyer and Shelby are two kittens from an unwanted litter.  The mother was scheduled to be spayed in a MN Spay Neuter Project event especially designed for low income clients who need help  with spaying and neutering their family pets.  Unfortunately, the mother ran away before she could be spayed so she will undoubtedly have another litter or more before someone finds her and takes her into their home or she dies trying to survive on her own outside.

Sawyer is a siamese cross and a manx.  His brother, Shelby, is an 'ordinary' orange tabby.  They are busy boys, full of fun and energy.

Because being a manx cat is a birth defect, there can be neurological problems.  When he came to us Sawyer was having trouble emptying his bowels.  He is on a medication that helps keep them soft and is doing much better now.  At this point we do not know if he will need to be on this medication, which is not expensive, for life.  Time will tell.   Soon they will be going into the clinic for testing for feline leukemia and fiv, to begin their vaccinations and shortly after that to be neutered.  Then they will be up on the website.

Garage Sale - Donations Needed!

One of our wonderful volunteers is holding a garage sale and donating all proceeds to Pet Haven. Becky is looking for donated goods to include in the sale. Please email her if you have anything to contribute: rebeccasheldon@yahoo.com

Here are some ideas from Becky:

I am looking for good saleable items: small furniture, yard and garden items, kitchen items, kids clothes and shoes in good condition and a few adult clothes in really good condition. Paper back books and games sell quite well but stuffed toys do not. A good test is to think, would I buy this at a garage sale? and if the answer is yes! donate it! Last year I sold hostas and lilies that I had dug from my yard. If you have any excess plants donate them too as they went very well last year.

Mark your calendars for the sale as well!
May 29th and 30th
9am to 5pm

Updates

Cougar is no longer residing at Now Boarding because he has been taken home to see how he and the resident dog will do together.  It appears things are going well and Cougar will soon be adopted into a new family!

Sapphire has taken his place at least while her foster is out of town for a week or so.  She is a very pretty little girl too with blue eyes.

Frankie has gone to the Chuck and Don's location in Highland.  He will rotate in and out of the store there and is up for adoption also.  We'd like the cat to have time in a foster home too to better stretch his legs and have more lap time (or shoulder time, in Frankie's case).  Frankie loves to ride around on your shoulder!  He also thoroughly enjoys a game of chase with Peter and Buster who are also in his foster home.

Fudge hopes you won't forget about her.  She's been in a new foster home for less than 2 weeks and has already managed to snuggle in with two of the resident 'older' ladies who live there.  Amber is orange, Greta is a brown tabby tortie and Fudge is in the same bed with them!  That's Moose in the foreground - his hair is growing back rapidly after his recent ear surgery.

All are up for adoption through Pet Haven.  Help us continue to find homes for these cats who deserve a chance at being loved and cared for in their very own forever home.

Dog seeks home with cats

Hello to all you cat lovers out there!  Did you know that cat lovers come in all shapes and sizes?  Some are even adorable female black labs - like me!

Yep, my name is Savannah and I like living with cats.  I also like living with other dogs and kids of all ages.

I came in to Pet Haven foster care a few months ago and spent several weeks in a foster home with two cats, several dogs and some kids.  Unfortunately, I showed them my houdini skills and jumped the fence a few too many times so I had to move on for my own safety.

My new foster home has a resident springer spaniel, Buddy, and usually another foster dog.  Right now the other foster is Winston, also a springer spaniel.  They're OK and my foster mom is great, but I would love to find a home to call my very own.  I would love to live with a couple of cats or another dog.  I am really craving some stability in my life after bouncing around so much.  I had to spend a couple of weeks in boarding and it stressed me out.  I thrive in a home environment and would love to settle myself in to your life.

A picture is worth a thousand words, so I've included a few photos that show off my best sides.  In one photo I'm giving Jen (a PH volunteer) a big hug.  She is laughing because I'm so charming.  Wouldn't you like a little Savannah sunshine in your life?  Email pethavendogs@yahoo.com and let's talk!

Redheads!

Flame and Flicker are a couple of little girls, siblings, who get along well with another cat or who wouldn't mind being adopted together.  They are friendly with people, living with teens and adults and also get along with the pug dog in the house.

They'll be spayed this week, go back to the foster home for recovery and can look for a new home after that.
